MTV 2019 Video Music Awards
THE PROJECT
MTV Asked me to create covers for all the Video of the Year nominees.
I researched each video in depth (ie: watched them on loop for hours) and composed each cover to best convey the video and the vibe of the artist.
The color palette was crafted so they would visually look different, but united as a set.
Mapping it out
Rough sketches for all the covers were done at the same time in order to ensure they looked good as a set. Dynamic compositions featured the artists in exciting ways. Each cover included elements from the music videos nominated, so they are summarized in one image perfectly.
Paying tribute to an intergalactic legend
A last minute addition was to draw the winner of the Video Vanguard Award, which was revealed to be Missy Elliot! Since her videos tend to have a futuristic, funky vibe to them, I illustrated her in space wearing her last live VMA performance outfit.
