Ariana Grande for Ulta Beauty

The Ulta Beauty brief was to illustrate the key visuals for Ariana Grande fragrance packaging as well as in-store marketing and a collectible comic book.

MY SOLUTION

Taking a cue from the design of the crystal bottle, the key visuals were set in space. This decision led to the retro-futuristic designs of everything from her armor to props and backgrounds. The color lavender was used throughout because it's one of Ariana's favorite colors and was very on trend.

CHALLENGES

The crystal-like fragrance bottle was already in production, so the designs needed to coordinate well with it.

The visuals also needed to translate well to other mediums because a collectible lunchbox and animated commercial was also in the works.

Animated Commercial

The characters I designed were brought to life in this incredible animated commercial for the fragrance.

Marketing + Promotion

To promote the fragrance, a comic book was created. The book was to be included in a collectible lunchbox as a throwback to the Star Wars lunchboxes of the 80s. I illustrated the cover while the comic book was written by friend, the amazing Marvel writer Terry Blas and I handpicked the interior artist Atomic Demon Art.
 

To create the fully realized world that expanded beyond just the key visuals, I designed the props, ships and included Ariana’s dog and pig in the comic. In addition - because every hero needs a villain, I designed the big bad guy that she’d have to defeat.
